Omg, exciting about Japan! If you at some point want a long, sink-into-able and somewhat Austen-esque novel set in early 20th century Osaka, I very much enjoyed Junipero Tanizaki's The Makioka Sisters.
Also, you've intrigued me about Cecilia. I read Evelina in an 18th Century class in college, but have not branched out into any of Burney's other stuff. Love your point about identifying the heroine with the book itself; that really is how those long, single-person-focused novels read, isn't it?
